What is implicit bias?

Enjoy the Excitement

Implicit bias refers to the beliefs and attitudes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious way. It can help us decide who is friend or foe, or determine whether a situation is dangerous or just coincidental.

Unlike explicit bias, where individuals are fully aware of their prejudices and attitudes about others, implicit bias stems from subtle cognitive processes that are developed through experiences- whether actual or perceived.

Many things can shape our biases, including family, friends, the media and schools. These examples are know as "units of socialization." These units influence our ideas about people and things that are different from what we experience.

What can we do to challenge our implicit biases and reduce our probability of committing microaggressions?

Fun for All Ages

  • We can reduce our biases by recognizing that we have them and working to change some of our attitudes.

  • If we aware that we have negative biases towards certain groups, we should interact with members of that group to gain an understanding of their values and beliefs.

  • Make an effort to see members of stereotyped groups as individuals.

  • Interacting with members of an "out group" can ideally change or at least challenge biases. You may find that you have more in common with them than you think.
